Noir Montmartre Tours is named in dedication to
a group of Americans whose history in Paris, France
spans for more than a century. Many of them expatriated to Paris
to experience her "joie de vivre"; others came to escape
the grip of racial bigotry and political and economic oppression.
A quote from the October 1925 arrival of La Revue Negre,
with brilliant musician Sidney Bechet and the fabulous
lady from St. Louis, miss Josephine Baker,
states "... and we were on our way to the hotels - in Montmartre,
the section of artists of all races, no prejudice, no racism -
at the right time, without a fuss." This quote emphasizes why
many would come for the special euphoria found in free artistic
expression.
During World War II talented American G.I.'s introduced their
unique artform called Jazz. Paris eventually became known as a
Mecca for "Le Jazz Hot". Following
the war, thousands of these veterans either stayed or returned
to Paris; some to form jazz bands, while other musicians,
artists and writers in America, flocked to Paris
for its atmosphere of acceptance and recognition; one which was
free of the discrimination known to them back home.
Through the years, the list of Americans to make a name for themselves
in Paris would include Chester Himes,
Langston Hughes, Richard Wright, Joe
Turner, Lester Young, and the irrepressible
Bricktop. Today, Noir Montmartre Tours
continues to salute the golden age of the Black American expatriate
in Paris; it is a period in history that continues
to inspire; as well as pave the way for all Americans for many
years to come.
